Differences between palliative care and end of life care

There are several differences between palliative, specialist palliative and end of life care.

Palliative care

Palliative care is the care provided to people with life-limiting illnesses.

It helps you to have the best quality of life and helps support your family and carers. This care can take place at your own home with the support of your GP. You may also have visits from a community nurse or a healthcare assistant.

Specialist palliative care

Specialist palliative care is for people with life-limiting illnesses with complex needs.

It is when palliative care at home cannot meet your needs. These may be physical, psychological, social or spiritual needs.

End of life care

End of life care is also known as continual health care. It is for people who are dying.

It helps you to be as comfortable as possible in your last days.

People who need palliative care may not need specialist palliative care or end of life care. People who are dying may not need specialist palliative care.
