Leadership and management training

The Trust believes that engaging and empowering leadership is important to delivering effective patient care. We encourage all our staff to take up leadership opportunities. National guidance suggests that strong leadership is an important part of excellent patient care.

Our leadership training programmes:

  • Bitesize training workshops. We offer a suite of bitesize training to support people who manage and supervise staff. This training is helpful to those that are new to management roles and it can also be a useful refresher for experienced managers.
  • Step on up programme. A practical management development programme for aspiring or new managers. It teaches management skills and tools in a group setting, emphasising compassionate and collective leadership in the NHS.
  • Chrysalis leadership programme. This programme is designed to help leaders and managers to create an environment where improvement and change can thrive. Feedback

We welcome feedback from all our learners to celebrate success and learn how we can improve the clinical learning environment.

Feedback is important at all times during a clinical placement, as if there are any issues we can offer support when it is needed. Learners can give feedback by using the Purple flag system, this is found on the learner app, posters around placement sites and QIR codes at induction. Purple flag is a way that learners can anonymously alert the MPET team about concerns about their placement experience.

After each placement, learners will be sent an evaluation link to complete an MS Forms survey.  We will share feedback with services to celebrate their successes as well as to learn from challenges.

Preceptorship

A preceptorship is a period of structured transition to guide and support newly qualified practitioners from being students to professionals who can work independently.

We offer a 12 month preceptorship programme to new registrants, internationally trained practitioners, return to practice practitioners and those transitioning into new settings.

You will be assigned a preceptor, who serves as a role model during the 12 month programme. Your preceptor will have at least 12 months experience within your work area. They will be at the same level or more senior to you. Preceptors will also have completed a training workshop in order to be able to provide support.

During your first year after registration, you will receive regular support from your preceptor. You will be given development goals and these will be reviewed regularly. There will be protected time within your work hours to meet your preceptor and discuss your development.

Multi-Professional Practice Education Team (MPET)

MPET provide support for anyone learning a new role at our Trust. We aim to support learners during their placement experience and to create and maintain a safe and effective learning environment.

We support all pre and post-registration multi-professional clinical learners across the Trust – apprentices, pre-registration undergraduate students, post-registration students and offer work experience opportunities.

The team also link closely with colleges and universities to provide pre-professional employment support, attend university open days to promote the Trust as a future employer and support with university student recruitment.

We support clinical services to maintain high-quality clinical learning environments and placements, ensuring learners are appropriately allocated to services and supported if they have any challenges or concerns.

We ensure that our placement areas have either practice educators (allied health professionals) or practice supervisors and assessors (nursing and midwifery), as they have a key role in supporting and assessing learners in practice. They serve as a role model to students in delivering safe and effective care, promoting the values of the Trust and the NHS constitution. To support this, we ensure our practice educators, practice supervisors and assessors are prepared for their roles and responsibilities when working with learners.

We provide support and advice for clinical services, staff and learners relating to clinical practice placements and we liaise with universities and other trusts to plan the delivery of placement capacity.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code contains the professional standards that nurses and midwives must uphold. Nurses are expected, as part of their role, to support learners and colleagues learning to help them develop their professional competence and confidence. This ensures that skills, knowledge and experience are shared for the benefit of everyone.

Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) standards

The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) have standards of conduct, performance and ethics and the standards of proficiency. Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) must work in partnership with their colleagues, share their skills, knowledge and experience where appropriate, for the benefit of service users and carers. This is in the Standard 2.5 of the Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics.
