CHEST - COPD health education and support training

This is an interactive patient education group held once a month for people to learn more about their COPD and how to best self-manage this. This is held at the Luton Treatment Centre in groups of no more than 10 people.

The course is built around education sessions and group activities to learn more about living and managing COPD. The course is a one day course and is suitable for anyone who has a diagnosis of COPD.

Pulmonary rehabilitation

Do you have a chronic lung condition? Do you get breathless whilst walking or climbing stairs?

If the answer to the above questions is yes, then Pulmonary Rehabilitation may be just the thing you need!

Pulmonary rehabilitation is an evidence-based multidisciplinary exercise and education programme for people with chronic lung disease and it is highly recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

It is suitable for patients with a variety of respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, bronchiectasis and pulmonary fibrosis.

The exercises are individually tailored to you, so that everyone can participate and gain the benefits.

The benefits of undertaking pulmonary rehabilitation are:

  • reduction in your levels of breathlessness
  • improvements in your general health and level of fitness
  • increased ability to carry out the daily activities that are important to you
  • better understanding of your respiratory condition
  • increased control over the symptoms of your condition
  • improvements in your levels of confidence and quality of life

Pulmonary rehabilitation programme

Our Pulmonary rehabilitation programmes are run by specialist respiratory therapists and clinical respiratory nurse specialists from Luton Community Respiratory Team.

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a seven-week course, with two sessions per week (total of 14 sessions). Each session lasts for two hours (one hour of exercise, one hour of education).

If you would like to join a pulmonary rehabilitation programme you can be referred via your GP, practice nurse, consultant or any healthcare professional. You may be able to self-refer into the programme.
