East of England Community Health and Care NHS Trust Research Physiotherapist, Gail, has recently completed the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) Associate Principal Investigator (PI) Scheme, a nationally recognised programme designed to develop the next generation of research leaders across the NHS.
As part of the scheme, Gail supported the delivery of the clinical research study SIGHT: Spatial Inattention Grasping Therapy for neglect post-stroke, on Beech ward gaining hands-on experience in study coordination, patient recruitment, and ensuring research protocols were followed safely and effectively.
Gail said:
“The Associate PI Scheme has given me valuable insight into further aspects of how research is delivered in practice and how it can directly improve patient care. It has also reinforced the importance of contributing to robust, high-quality data by carefully following study protocols and guidance, ensuring research findings are reliable and can genuinely inform and improve clinical practice.”
Through this experience, Gail developed key skills in:
Research leadership and coordination
Stroke patient engagement in research
Data collection and governance
Multidisciplinary team working and increasing awareness of research amongst ward staff
Importantly, this work contributes to strengthening the Trust’s research culture and ensures patients have access to innovative, evidence-based treatments.
