Non-Executive Director Visits Living Well Service at Priscilla Bacon Lodge

Anna Gill recently spent time with the Living Well Service at Priscilla Bacon Lodge in Norwich, gaining first-hand insight into the care and support provided to patients, carers and families.

Anna observed multidisciplinary team meetings, joined a carers' support group, toured the inpatient ward and therapeutic gardens, and met colleagues across the hospice. She was particularly impressed by the highly personalised approach to care, noting how staff support patients and families far beyond their clinical needs, tailoring care to individual circumstances and helping people to live as well as possible throughout their illness.

The visit highlighted the wide range of holistic support available through the service, including breathlessness programmes, movement groups, psychological support and a 24-hour palliative care advice line that is valued across the wider health and care system.

Strong partnerships with community, acute, chaplaincy and safeguarding teams were also evident, helping to ensure coordinated and compassionate care.

Anna also heard directly from carers attending the recently established weekly carers' group. Participants described the group as "literally a lifesaver", "the highlight of my week" and "the thing that keeps me going", underlining the vital support it provides to family members and loved ones.

Reflecting on her time with the Living Well Service, Anna praised the team's professionalism, compassion and ambition, recognising both the quality of the current service and its aspirations to expand support, tackle inequalities in access to palliative care, and develop new initiatives for patients and carers.

Anna said: "I was incredibly impressed by the skill, compassion and dedication of the team. There is a strong focus on personalised, holistic care and a clear ambition to continue developing services so that more people and communities can benefit from the support available. It was an insightful and inspiring visit."

Service visits play an important role in helping members of the Trust Board understand the experiences of patients and staff, celebrate excellence, and identify opportunities to further improve services.
